Lady Sybil’s love affair with her Irish chauffeur, Branson, may have failed to convince some Downton Abbeyviewers, but the actors cannot be faulted for their lack of effort.
Jessica Brown-Findlay, who plays the earl’s daughter, has fallen for Allen Leech, the real-life Branson, according to his brother, Simon, a racehorse owner.“After a few too many glasses of burgundy, Simon let it slip that the pair had begun an off-screen love affair some time ago,” claims Jo Foster, a racing columnist, who was seated next to him at a dinner.
Brown-Findlay, 22, told Mandrake in April that her boyfriend was Thomas Campbell, an artist. “We’ve been together for about a year and a half,” she said. They had not been able to move in together. “Artists need to sell their paintings,” she laughed. “He spends all his time painting in his studio and he’s so committed – it’s such a solitary thing.” Leech, 30, made clear recently that he was single.
Brown-Findlay’s publicists, who also represent Leech, are keen to play down the claims, saying there is “no truth” in the affair. However, Foster insists: “It came from the horse’s mouth.”
