霍建华在国外的报导Wallace Huo: Breaking racial barriers By Isah V. Red
Manila Standard Today 2004-07-24
Wallace Huo is only 24 years old, yet he is already a star not only in his native Taiwan but in countries across Asia where Twin Sisters (100 Percent Señorita) is aired either in its original Fookienese, or dubbed in a foreign language like Filipino.
The tall and handsome Taiwanese was a recent visitor during a promotional blitz for Twin Sisters, which currently airs on GMA at 4 p.m. He arrived on July 16 with co-star Joe Chan and immediately buckled down to work, doing the rounds of guest appearances on radio and television. The following day, after a brief appearance on Eat…Bulaga in which he sang a song in Fookienese, he and Chan proceeded to the SM Megamall Megastrip where thousands of fans were already waiting for them. The moment they caught a glimpse of the Taiwanese star they became hysterical.
Huo looked delighted but surprised at how he affected the crowd. Through an interpreter he said, “I didn’t expect Filipinos to give me and my co-star Joe Chan a very warm reception.” Comparing their fans in Taiwan, he said, “The Filipinos are more expressive with their feelings.”
We met Wallace Huo Sunday afternoon at the 17th floor of the new GMA Network Center building on Edsa corner Timog Avenue. The motley group of members of the media waited patiently for the Taiwanese star. But when he came everyone seemed dazed and dazzled by the figure cutting across the hall.
Wallace Huo occupied the seat at the center of a presidential table, flanked by an interpreter and GMA program manager Joey Abacan. He easily warmed up to the members of the media, even if he admitted that he wasn’t used to meeting the movie press.
He told everyone how grateful he is to GMA for giving him the chance to visit the Philippines again. Yes, this wasn’t his first time in Manila. “I came here with my friends when I was 16 years old. It was a brief vacation,” he said. “The only thing I can remember was riding a horse and a guy on foot guided me up a hill.”
At home in Manila. That was how he described his brief stay in the city. He regretted having to stay only a few days because he wanted to see the city. “I want to become familiar with Filipinos and their culture. I’d definitely be back, stay longer and go places.”
Wallace is perhaps one of the most elusive bachelors in Taiwan. He said that at the moment he is not committed to anyone, adding that he is not looking for any type of girl. “She just has to have a good sense of humor and is very caring,” he added. He also did not discount the possibility of falling for a Filipino girl. “Why not? I don’t have relatives here. Maybe I should get married to a Filipina so I would have many relatives here.”
The much-waited chinovela Twin Sisters (100 percent Señorita) premiered last July 19..
Wallace Huo is better known as the debonair Hilton in A Promise of Love at the Dolphin Bay.
Twin Sisters is a touching story of how two sisters were separated at birth but were reunited by fate. The mother of twins Felicity and Annabel was a “babymaker” who kept one of them and gave away the other to a rich businessman. Felicity became the rich twin while Annabel endured a life of poverty with her mother. What follows is a riveting tale of betrayal, deceit, self-discovery, and true love.
Don’t miss the captivating story of Twin Sisters (100 Percent Señorita) weekdays starting this Monday, 4 p.m. on GMA.
Wallace, apart from starring in television drama series, is also a film actor. He has just wrapped up work on a movie shot in Hong Kong. “I’m not sure if it would be shown in Manila. But, in that movie, I have a lot of sexy scenes.” Someone asked, “Did you take your clothes off?” Wallace smiled and gestured to unbutton his shirt. The women among the group of writers shrieked in excitement.
While he has become more popular as an actor, Wallace is also a singer with several albums to his credit. What surprised the movie press was his revelation that he is a fan of Regine Velasquez. “I like Jackie Cheung, and so when I heard about him singing a duet with a Filipino singer, I bought the CD. When I heard Regine’s voice I really liked her, I also bought her CDs.”
Someone asked if he’d agree to record a song with Regine Velasquez. “Why not, but I have to practice first because I can’t match her voice. She’s really a great singer.”
Judging by how Wallace has warmed to his Filipino fans, it should not surprise us if he decides to make Manila his home away from home.
