Unknown to the Musketeers, she's working as a spy for Cardinal Richelieu. 'She's the Cardinal's secret weapon, his right-hand woman and a bit of a siren,' explains Maimie. 'She's an assassin and a contract killer with a dark and troubled past full of crime and poverty, which has a lot to do with the way she is. Milady is a gutter whore really, but she can enchant men with her wonderful dresses and the way she conducts herself.

She's fearless and gutsy and has an incredible strength to her. That survival instinct is very powerful and she's always trying to propel herself forward.'

Milady ends up murdering several men along the way, but D'Artagnan doesn't realise this when he takes her to bed in the first episode. 'When I encounter him, I know he could potentially be very useful to have as an ally,' says Maimie. 'But he has no idea that I'm out to use him. It's a delicious role to play. Her seductive powers are as finely tuned as they can be. She knows she can turn them on and men will fall for them. She thinks most men are pretty stupid and greedy.'

'But he has such a strong moral code that when he discovered her past he attempted to have her sentenced to death, which completely shattered her,' says Maimie. 'From that time on she's taken a vengeful attitude towards men. Athos was an incredible man she met early on in their lives, but he let her down in the worst possible way.'
