Adam Lambert – The Original High CD ReviewPosted on June 9, 2015 by The Music God CJ Plain
So, once again I am back writing reviews. I have been off for a while doing other aspects including my radio shows, working on new music that will be recorded for my future solo record, and going to school to learn audio/video engineering.
In my time off, I’ve heard a ton of new music from bands both national and local across all different genres. As a writer and performer, I try to keep an open mind towards new music. I will freely admit though, there are a number of artists that I’m just NOT that fond of though. We won’t name any names, per se, we’ll just say when I hear those artists, I immediately race to change the tune.
When the last Adam Lambert record, Trespassing, was released, I would have counted Adam among those artists. I did listen with an open mind though and was blown away by the record. I ended up becoming somewhat of a fan. I, in no way, would call myself a Glambert, but I do have a much better respect for his music than before.
With that said, Adam is ready to release his new record, The Original High. I find myself once again sitting here listening with an open mind wondering if he will be able to top the last record. Let’s take a musical journey through this record, song by song.
    1) Ghost Town: this was the first song released. Upon first hearing it, I absolutely LOVED the opening but HATED the sort of techno style breakdown in the chorus. Upon a few more listens though, it sort of grew on me and I don’t hate it now. Not the direction I would have went, but I can respect it for what it is. The lyrics are great though and Adam’s voice is in fine form.
    2) The Original High: The title track. This song immediately grabs you with a sort of funky, electro-rock vibe wrapped in an almost Disco style bounce. Great vocal delivery here that is catchy as hell. The beat really wins for me though. This is infectious.
    3) Another Lonely Night: The first of the slower tunes. Restrained vocals to open that launch into a nice subtle beat. The song moves along nicely and is pretty catchy, as well. This would make a great late night cruising tune.
    4) Underground: A slower jam that really grabs with a fine vocal performance. A bit more laid back but still very emotional in depth. I dig the more laid back style of this one.
    5) There I Said It: wow! What a hammer of a tune! My favorite so far. The emotional depth of his voice and lyrics on this is off the freaking scales! Same kind of impact that Runnin’ had from the last record. This is the kind of song that future singers will be singing in auditions. Worth the price of the record alone.
    6) Rumors: This song features the first of two features on the record. This one features Tove Lo singing along side Adam. This is a fun song that is a middle finger to the haters that spread rumors. Their voices work perfectly together and Adam really lets it fly here without sounding all gospel-ish. A great song that I can see getting airplay on R & B radio.
    7) Evil In The Night: This tune is another with winner written all over it. An almost Mark Ronson style funky jam with some monster Adam vocals laid over it. The chorus of this one just works as well. I’d love to see a remix of this one featuring Adam and Bruno Mars.
    8) Lucy: The second of the feature songs, this one with Brian May of Queen. I dig this, it has an almost Dirt Diana sort of thing going on without copying it in any way. Some pretty big vocals here as well. Brian turns in a big, fat guitar solo as well that puts the song on that next level. A great change of pace for the record.
    9) Things I Didn’t Say: A nice electro rocker that comes across as kind of bland in comparison to the earlier songs. Not a bad song, mind you. I’m sure some people will like it, just doesn’t have that same impact the other songs have had so far.
    10) The Light: A decent dance style tune that should get people on the floor to dance. Has a good beat and good vocals.
    11) Heavy Fire: A good song to end the record on. Nice restrained style vocals with a heavy beat to drive the song home. It has a great fade out as well.
So, what are my finals thoughts?
This is Adam doing what Adam does. The vocals are all over the place but NOT in a bad way. He uses his range and experience to really take you on a roller coaster ride through these songs. He hits all the emotional checkpoints along the way to really make you feel what you’re listening to.
After such a monumental last record, I wasn’t sure he could top it. I think in a lot of ways, he might not of…but again, not in a bad way. This one doesn’t have quite the ‘instant’ feel that the last one had. This one has a bit more depth, both lyrically and musically. It has a monster mix to it that really is great. It sounds like a million bucks on surround sound speakers while having some beautiful, crisp highs and lows in the mix.
I also feel that this one has plenty of room to grow as well. While there’s a couple of the songs toward the end that didn’t blow me away, they weren’t bad songs either. Maybe they’ll grow on me like the first one did. I do know that the trio of the Title track, There I Said It, and Rumors are worth the price alone that you’ll spend on this. All three should be smash hits for Adam and deservedly so.
So, final score. Let’s give this one a 9 out of 10. Things I Didn’t Say and The Light didn’t blow me away but the early songs MORE than make up for that. The mix is crystal clear and sounds really big. Great length for your money without being overly long. This should go a long way to making Adam an even bigger star than he already is.

Adam Lambert returns officially next week with his third studio album 'The Original High', but fans of the punk-pop-rock singer were treated prematurely this week when Amazon made the entire record streamable for the lead-up to the release.
To celebrate the release, Female First has reviewed the record track-by-track so you know what to expect if you're waiting for the big day! Celebrate Glamberts, because it's a good one - now's time for Adam to truly shine.
Towards the end of April we called lead single 'Ghost Town' Adam's best single release of all time, and the "best pop single to come out of the year so far". Now over a week into June, that point still stands. 'Ghost Town' is an incredible, genre-bending journey that will have the listener feeling joyous yet confused - the subject matter isn't one to put smiles on faces, but the melodies and production is top of the range. The whistle line hook firmly plants itself within your mind and Adam does well to unleash a new yet strangely familiar side to his sound with this track.
        'The Original High
Pure disco, Adam here allows his vocals to soar throughout the chorus without the need to strain. It's a sexy track that's got "summer hit" written all over it - it'd be interesting to see if this is the album's next cut, as 'The Original High' would sound perfect on the radio. Keep an ear on hold for that brilliant falsetto.
        'Another Lonely Night
This is a track that's hit me like no other song Adam's released has managed to do. It's utterly tragic and compelling - I thought Adam had done a great job of conveying those emotions in the past but this song really blows anything like it out of the water. The chorus sees Max Martin and Shellback add their own touch of magic, proving that this collaboration was a match made in heaven. This album at this point is already Adam's crowning moment. Songs such as this one are the reason music continues to exist - it sets trends rather than following them.
        'Underground
Slightly stripped back on production, there's a slight lack here of hammering the tune home, but that also works as part of its charm and isn't necessarily necessary in order for the song to work. It may not grab your attention immediately like those that came before it, but 'Underground' is likely going to be one of those hidden gems that blooms into a fan favourite as time goes by.
        'There I Said It'
After 'Underground' it's clear that the order of this record is one that's been carefully considered. We started things with three high-impact tracks, toned things down for 'Underground' and then completely ripped away a lot of production for 'There I Said It'. The passion in Adam's voice is thick as he allows his own layers to be peeled back and a sincere vulnerability to shine through. Despite that, he's a "grown ass man", and this song is a big 'FU' to anyone who doesn't believe it.
        'Rumors' (feat. Tove Lo)
A beautiful instrumental introduces Tove Lo as the first vocal we hear on 'Rumors' ahead of a catchy bridge to the chorus delivered in style by Adam himself. Collaborations of this sort are - aside from Queen - a rare thing for Adam, and so when he allows himself to share a track with a fellow artist it's always going to be a risk. Luckily this one pays off as a clear cut pop smash is delivered.
        'Evil In The Night'
Back to hard-hitting production, Max Martin and Shellback's presence is felt in a stonker of a song. It continues to showcase the sexy side to Adam that's been evolving throughout his career to-date. As above, it's going to be one that absolutely erupts any arena or stage into musical bliss and I'll join @noskerdycat in saying I can't wait to see Adam kill it live.
        'Lucy' (feat. Brian May)
Just a gorgeous song, and Brian May is of course incredible. Their chemistry shines through on what is a huge, huge highlight of the record. If Queen were ever to release new music, Adam would be the perfect man to bring any vocals to life.
        'Things I Didn't Say'
Surely one everybody can relate to - not understanding why a significant other didn't get how you felt or are feeling because of what you DIDN'T do. It's a complex thing, emotion, but Adam seems to have found the perfect formula needed to embed it within all of his songs. If you're looking for relatability, look no further. Adam is a master at making the listeners the subject of his content.
        'The Light'
Unfortunately on first listen 'The Light' didn't do much for me. That may be down to the intense brilliance of the songs that came before it, or it may just be a dud tune. It fits the theme of the album perfectly and would sound great in a club, but it's not the type of memorable song we've been given elsewhere on the album.
        'Heavy Fire'
A well-paced song to end things on. It allows you to slow down and enjoy what you've experienced. That is, another fantastic Adam Lambert collection of songs. 'Heavy Fire' allows Adam to confess he now feels "so complete just like an honest liar". Though we know he will always have something fresh to give, he's never been more whole.
In its entirety, 'The Original High' is nothing short of a piece of art. Looking back at first album 'For Your Entertainment', sophomore record 'Trespassing' and then focusing in on today, the path that Adam has taken has seen him mature and develop into one of the finest artists of our generation. He may not always get the praise or commercial success that he deserves, but the fact that he has a fanbase willing to do just about anything to support him just proves how incredible he is, not only as a musician but as an icon of the business.
Not only that but he comes across as genuinely likeable and charismatic during interviews, press and meetings with fans. We couldn't wish anything but good for Adam and hopefully, now with this new studio record he can gain the recognition he so deserves.

REVIEW: Adam Lambert – The Original High
Call it the Nick Jonas effect. A middling, mainstream teeny-bop icon decides to go all greyscale and reinvent where they’ve come from with some banging synth-pop. It worked for Jonas, it worked for Brandon Flowers, and it certainly works forAdam Lambert.
It’s all the more surprising given Lambert has never quite stuck with us since day one. Like America’s equivalent of Will Young, his pop career post-Idol has been a series of odd detours that never quite befit his talent. The fact that the term “Glamberts” is used for the fandom encapsulates the high-camp bombast that he chose to adopt – don’t even get us started on that Queen phase – so when Lambert declares “Elvis is dead” on the opening track, we admit we’re a little bit thankful.
The Original High feels like Lambert at his most original and most comfortable (dropping a ‘fuck’ in the first three minutes is a point well made, let’s be honest), and it feels like seeing an artist properly work his magic for the first time. This is in no small part thanks to the executive production credits of Max Martin and Shellback, who can make even a whistle-ditty sound club-ready on the shimmering lead single Ghost Town.
The album pulses with one incredible pop jam after another. The title track is a sprint both lyrically and musically to that eponymous buzz, which is more than rewarded by an explosive chorus. And whether it’s a slower jam like the sensual Underground or the spikier ‘bombs over Broadway’ burial on Evil In The Night, it’s all united by the common thread of Adam Lambert’s supreme charisma. There’s a lot to be said when a feature from fellow musical drug-baron Tove Lo feels like the weakest spot on a record, but it’s such a joy to hear Lambert in his solo element on bangers like The Light that anyone else (especially Brian May) feels like an unwanted distraction.
Suffice to say, this black-and-white rebirth is a turning point for Lambert, not least because it’s allowed him to shed all the frills that he may have felt obliged to project under his old image, ready to show us what he’s really capable of. But maybe those high-theatrics were the workout for Lambert; clearly that path has allowed him to become such a muscular performing artist that he can shoulder the burden of a record front-loaded with power-packed chart smashes. That’s where the heady hit from The Original High comes from: knowing that a talent like this has been in front of us all along, but the sense that we’re truly discovering him for the very first time.

"Rumors" is a stunning collaboration with acclaimed Swedish songstress Tove Lo.Speaking of collaborations, "Lucy" is yet another solid tune, where he works with Queen's lead guitarist Brian May.The recording "Evil In The Night" is as impressive as the live version that he performed at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, as part of KTUphoria on May 31.His CD closes with "The Light" and the melodically-beautiful "Heavy Fire," thus leaving his "Glambert" fans thirsty for more great music. The VerdictOverall, Adam Lambert's latest studio album is sheer perfection. He proves to get better with every release. All of the tracks on this CD are keepers, making it difficult to select a favorite. He is the epitome of top-notch vocal talent. 'The Original High' review: Adam Lambert lifts his game
                    REVIEW
It's no surprise really that Adam Lambert left "American Idol" with a messed-up sense of how best to use his amazing voice. Like most singing competitions, that show values long, towering notes above all else.
The rest of the world? Not so much.
On "The Original High" (Warner Bros.), Lambert figures that out -- in part thanks to his touring run with Queen and teaming up with Swedish super-producers Max Martin and Shellback, who helmed his hit "Whataya Want From Me." And the results are spectacular.
It's not that Lambert eliminates the big notes entirely, he just uses them more sparingly and to better effect. They become the crowning glory of the lovely ballad "There I Said It," the calling card of the funk-guitar-driven "Evil in the Night."
However, it's the mix of stripped-down rock and dance music, which powers the charming first single "Ghost Town" and the groovy Kylie-influenced title track, where Lambert really makes his mark.
On the Disclosure-like "Things I Didn't Say," Lambert positions himself as the American Sam Smith, with power to spare in his soaring high notes. That's right where he belongs.
