[Verse 1]
Lana is talking to her fans, listening to Lana’s vintage-like music. They get high and drunk while listening to her songs. They are going to build the future and take responsibilities in their life and sometimes it may be depressing or preventing them to enjoy their young years. Coming through sattelites refers to either being high, drunk, or a combination of both, to the point that you feel like you are on a “sattelite” or another planet completely.
“You’re part of the past, but now you’re the future.”Lana is referring to her target audience who is the Millennial generation. Born at the end of the 20th century and old enough to remember the world before the digital age, millennials are a part of the past (i.e. pre-digital age) but are also the future of the world, right now.
I don’t think Lana is referring to her own music when she says this, she’s pointing out the irony of younger generations listening to music from many decades before (vintage music) through methods that couldn’t have been dreamed of at the time (satellite radio, streaming). Therefore, when she describes them as “part of the past, but now you’re the future”, she is noticing how young people today are fascinated with the music, clothes, and culture of previous generations, and yet they, as young people, belong to the future.
I think there is a lot more to say about this line. Lana seems to be reminiscing by comparing things from the past with the present and future. Vintage music is the past, while kids are the present. The next lines with sattelites, traveling through the past and the future really has a galactic theme, but she tries to connect this feelings with the fact that people although they know each other for a long time, still aren’t always on one line. When it comes to fans of Lana or people in her own environment, signals of feelings can get messed up, people come and people go, people stay and come back. It’s all a process derived from fame.
Signals crossing is referencing the waves of data that fly through the air and into our brains at all times, Wifi, streaming, music, news, podcasts but also the monumental shift that has happened in our society with the advent of the Internet and social media. Our ways of interacting with each other has changed. Many communicate to their friends through their phones, whether face to face (Snapchat) or without speaking at all (texting.) Dedicated interaction while physically present with another person can be a challenge. We’re more in tune with what’s on our phones than the person we’re sitting next to. This makes relationships and friendships a struggle. We forget how to read other people, signals get crossed.
[Pre-Chorus 1-2]
The idea that love – and the ups and down that come with it – can turn someone insane is something that has appeared throughout Lana’s entire catalogue, in songs like ‘Cruel World’ and ‘Ride’, for an example. But here, instead of losing her mind and being sad about this fact, it seems like Lana is accepting love’s condition and, as she alternates the subjects from these verses between ‘you’ and ‘me’ towards the end of the track, it’s as if she’s telling her fans that she feels the same way as them, but that’s fine and there’s no need to worry.
[Chorus 1-2]
Del Rey fans wake up everyday sometimes feeling empty, pressed and unsure about where they’re going, wandering around the city thinking about their problems hoping they get resolved somehow. Then going back again to the routine feeling like nothing is going to change and their monotonous life will always be this way. Leading into depression. She acknowledges their situation feeling empathy for them as once she was in this position. She tells them that there’s no limitations to enjoy their youth, feeling capable of anything. Seeking for love, wanting them to feel loved, never aging in their hearts, always no matter what.
[Verse 2]
Still addressing the young generation, the fans listening to her music, most likely millennials, Lana sings about the world of information accessible to the youth, so much that it can get depressing at times, especially being aware of the extent of evil like no generation before. She sings about not abusing this information in the following line.
“the blues” is a slang word for 30mg oxcodone instant release pills, which happen to be blue also slang word for 1mg xanax pills, which are also blue. del rey is saying that though her young fans may have ways to access these drugs, it doesn’t mean that they should take, or abuse them. she’s acknowledging that the world her generation has grown up in is objectively depressing, but that that doesn’t justify falling into apathy, nihilism, sadism, etc.
[Chorus 3]
Straying from the previous choruses, Lana exchanges, “you,” for, “I,” implying that she still has her youth and is part of whom she is referring to in this song. She still dresses up without reason, retaining her youthful appearances despite passing time. This alteration may also imply that Lana relates with her fans on a personal level.Lana is referring to the youngsters who have dreams and goals for the future. She doesn’t want them to give up because they feel like they don’t matter. Because they still have a bright future to come.
[Outro]
The outro is Lana singing a bit from the Beach Boys classic, Don’t Worry Baby. Lana is also telling her fans not to worry as she understands them and the choices that they have made because she’s lived a life that mirrors theirs. This outro also mirrors the outro of Freak where a humming was used as a space for reflective thought.
