The Graveyards of Galicia - A Diary entry from the Eastern Front
A diary entry from László Fekete (1913-1945), an infantryman who served in the Galician Campaign. This entry was discovered in a handbook buried in the mud by a joint Russian-Magyar scouting brigade in 1948 and was smuggled back into Hungary. Due to its potentially inflammatory content, it has been regularly censored by the Hungarian government. However, the entry circulates political organisations and has become quite the centrepiece for ideas of Magyar Nationalism, Isolationism, Militarism and even Centralism.
Their pushes are becoming more and more aggressive. All my friends have died, the division’s men have been slaughtered by that ghastly bear to the east. Its fangs mangle every attempt we have at defending our positions, they’re just too strong. We’ve lost so many men this week. Fathers, sons and brothers have been massacred in these snowy cliffs by the dozens. The Russian shells never stop; they swarm us so quickly… I’m always on the run. We have no chance… We never did. The commanding officer shot himself last night, I heard the gunfire from my tent. No matter how volatile the situation gets, no matter how despondent I become – I will never accept such a fate. I have a wife and two children... Whoever reads this – have mercy on them, I beg of you. I pray that they’re safe. They’re all I have left. I never asked for this war, no one wanted it. That bastard in Vienna and his incestuous friendships with that joke of a man in Berlin dragged thousands of us to this fate. The blood is on his hands. Hungary is free and should not bow down to a stuck up and stingy fiend in the ‘Palaces of Wien’. Why should a Magyar die in a German’s war? Mária, I love you. Feed the children, take them to church and keep them safe. Lord have mercy on you. We’ll meet again soon. I love you. To whoever Magyar shall read this; learn one thing. Hungary must be free. Her sons will die, and their blood will cast the sky red until she throws off the shackles of foreign rule. Even if it means carrying the heaviest of burdens, Hungary must be free. God bless you all.”
Fekete was reported MIA after the battle ended in Russian victory, though it is assumed by all his body was never recovered. Be it his body was churned up by the Russian war machine, or he lives in exile to this day; his words serve as a message to all Hungarians who read his tale – Hungary must be free.
