Chappel is an amazing professor. If you have the chance to take a class with him, do so. There is quite a bit of reading, but all the reading is very interesting. There are short quizzes, once per unit that are really easy if you pay attention to the lectures. Just a great overall class, and Chappel says some hilarious things.
HR/Genocide was a pretty good class and Chappel was able to provide unique insights on the topic. This class is a good deal- Chappel genuinely wants all kids to learn material/get good grades. I never felt like the reading was too much and the final paper is fine. Chappel builds in time into class to do the final paper/presentation.
Great professor, great class! He really cares about students and he's one of those rare history professors who truly considers the opinions of his students. We would debate the merits and downsides to differing points of view and he would never impose his own view on us. A bit of reading, but don't worry because it's interesting stuff.
This is one of the most memorable courses I've taken at Duke! Professor Chappel is an amazing professor who knows how to deliver an entertaining lecture that is well-structured and thought provoking. He also cares deeply about his students and wants them to become know how historians think. I would definitely take the class again.
Prof Chappel is very knowledgeable &passionate. He also makes his lectures very engaging and interesting! There is quite a lot of reading but if you keep up to date and go to class (participation matters), the class is not hard. There are some quizzes but they're very straightforward and he gives great feedback on essays. Would strongly recommend.
Professor Chappel is great! You can tell he really wants every student to do well in his class. He's always responsive to emails and willing to meet outside of class for assistance on essays, etc. There's a ton of reading and both an in-class final and 12 page essay for our final grade. But, if you do the work, you should easily get an A.
Dr. Chappel is a very understanding professor and knows how to make students study without overwhelming them. His lectures are amazing and he spices them up with some humor. His tests are easy as long as you listen to his lectures; lots of reading but they're manageable and engaging. He is an extremely helpful professor and is always there for you.
I don't even like History that much but I LOVED this class. He's very passionate about the subject matter and is always willing to meet with you outside of class. His lectures were really interesting and I learned so much! He doesn't hand out A's but getting a good grade is absolutely possible. Quizzestestsshort assignments are very manageable.
Class - Europe in the Twentieth Century; amazing professor, well versed and all that. He also showed us a lot of the other sides of history; he was by no means an apologist for Nazism or Fascism, but some of the most interesting parts of the class were spent discussing the very legitimate (contextual) rationales that people had for them.
