I’m a native speaker so it’s hard for me to say if I ‘love’ or ‘hate’ learning English because I did not have a choice since this language has always been the primary mode of communication ever since I was born.
But I do think I can answer the question in the form of me learning Mandarin as a second language. I love learning Mandarin, for the most part, because not only it allows me to communicate better with the Chinese foreigners in my city but also brings me closer to people outside of my immediate friend circle.
I take weekly classes here in NYU. Online classes of course, with COVID and shit going on. Before COVID, the classes were in person and I got to interact with my classmates who are mostly monolingual Americans. The interaction with them helps me a little when it comes to mustering courage expressing myself in mandarin. It’s comforting to know that your friends won’t make fun of you because you are bad.
