Pedrosa and his crew focused on preparing his prototype for the demanding rigours of the Mugello circuit and Sunday’s race. Further modifications will be made during Saturday’s second practice before qualifying, and Pedrosa was pleased with how his workload had developed during the opening session.
“We focused mainly on testing Bridgestone’s tyre options because it’s very important to get that selection right to find the performance for race distance. The track conditions weren’t bad today although the surface was quite slippery, so times will improve,” he stated. “Stability and agility are very important at this circuit and we still need to work on the chassis set-up side to improve these areas.”
Pedrosa set the fifth fastest time of the session with a 1’50.773, and added: “We were not especially fast today, but we were not looking for an ultimate lap time either. For the first day of practice we are going in the right direction and tomorrow we can move forward.”

For the first time in his career Valentino Rossi will not participate in his home GP at Mugello. A highside crash in the second practice session on Saturday morning at the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM has led to the Italian’s withdrawal from Sunday’s race, with the full period of time of his recovery yet to be determined.
The defending World Champion fell at Turn 13, the top of the fast chicane, as his M1 highsided and threw him from the bike. Rossi was stretchered from the track and taken directly to the medical centre, where he underwent X-rays which confirmed a displaced and exposed fracture of his right tibia.
Doctor Macchiagodena of the Clinica Mobile told motogp.com: “It’s an injury more serious than we thought, because it’s an exposed fracture with the bone protruding from the skin. We have reduced the fracture, which fortunately has not affected any blood vessels or nerves.”
“It is serious, it could be a couple of months, but it is too early to say just yet. He remained calm, but having seen the images he could already see it was a nasty fall.”
Rossi was then flown by helicopter to the Careggi Hospital in Florence for a further medical examination. Doctor Macchiagodena explained to motogp.com that Rossi will then be moved to the orthopaedic trauma centre, which is close to the hospital, where he is likely to be operated on later today.

Dani Pedrosa will be going all out for his first win of the 2010 season at the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM on Sunday, and the Repsol Honda will do so from pole position. A hot lap of 1’48.819 placed the Spaniard 0.177s ahead of rival and Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo in Saturday’s qualifying session.
Commenting on his second pole of the campaign, the 15th premier class one of his career, Pedrosa hailed the hard work of his team in delivering a strong setting on his RC212V which enabled him to ride at his accustomed high level.
"We’ve been working very hard through free practice and in qualifying this afternoon to improve things from yesterday, and we’ve achieved this so I’m satisfied,” said Pedrosa. “Being on the front row is the important thing and we have to keep our concentration because to win the race is the target - we have to make it tomorrow!”
The 24 year-old set his fastest time on the penultimate lap of his session as he refused to give up on top spot. “We were pushing very hard right to the end and we were able to do a good final lap, but the most important factor is that we’ve been able to be consistent too,” he said. “Lorenzo will be the man to beat tomorrow, but we are confident, the machine is working better here and we are in better shape than at the last race in Le Mans.”
Pedrosa also offered his wishes for a quick recovery to Valentino Rossi, who fractured his right tibia in a practice crash earlier in the day. “All of us riders know how you feel when you are hurt, and I just hope that the operation goes well for him because the first operation is always the most important.”
