出自《威尼斯商人》第三幕第一場，夏洛克是在威尼斯的猶太商人，他女兒帶走家中的財寶，跟主角團（當地白人基督徒）中一個男人私奔，對夏洛克來說，異教徒的他們偷走他唯一的孩子並且令她改信基督教（不當猶太人了），令他絕子絕孫，所以才那麼憤怒的要向主角團報仇。
夏洛克：有什么消息！我的女儿逃走啦，這件事情是你比誰都格外知道得詳細的。
薩拉里諾：那當然啦，就是我也知道她飛走的那對翅膀是哪一個裁縫替她做的。
薩萊尼奧：夏洛克自己也何嘗不知道，她羽毛已長，當然要离開娘家啦。
夏洛克：她干出這种不要臉的事來，死了一定要下地獄。
薩拉里諾：倘然魔鬼做她的判官，那是當然的事情。
夏洛克：我自己的血肉跟我過不去！
薩萊尼奧：說什么，老東西，活到這么大年紀，還跟你自己過不去？
夏洛克：我是說我的女儿是我自己的血肉。
薩拉里諾：你的肉跟她的肉比起來，比黑炭和象牙還差得遠；你的血跟她的血比起來，比紅葡萄酒和白葡萄酒還差得遠。可是告訴我們，你听沒听見人家說起安東尼奧在海上遭到了損失？
夏洛克：說起他，又是我的一樁倒霉事情。這個敗家精，這個破落戶，他不敢在交易所里露一露臉；他平常到市場上來，穿著得多么齊整，現在可變成一個叫化子啦。讓他留心他的借約吧；他老是罵我盤剝取利；讓他留心他的借約吧；他是本著基督徒的精神，放債從來不取利息的；讓他留心他的借約吧。
薩拉里諾：我相信要是他不能按約償還借款，你一定不會要他的肉的；那有什么用處呢？

it will feed my revenge. He hath disgraced me, and
hindered me half a million; laughed at my losses,
mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my
bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine
enemies; and what's his reason? I am a Jew. Hath
not a Jew eyes? hath not a Jew hands, organs,
dimensions, senses, affections, passions? fed with
the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject
to the same diseases, healed by the same means,
warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as
a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed?
if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison
us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not
revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will
resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian,
what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian
wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by
Christian example? Why, revenge. The villany you
teach me, I will execute, and it shall go hard but I
will better the instruction.
