ET is with Kevin Costner as he spreads the word about a new way to save homeless, lovable dogs from being euthanized in overcrowded animal shelters and to find them a new home -- via private jet!
In a "Freedom Flight" from his home in Aspen, CO, to Edmonton, Alberta, the Oscar winner is talking about the rescue efforts of The Orange Dog (www.orangedog.ca), which has rescued more than 300 small breed dogs.
"When this plane is operating at its best, it's not just taking people around the world, it's hauling animals, courtesy of Jan Folk, who created Orange Dog, [which is] essentially an exchange of animals that were going to be euthanized," says Kevin. "Instead of having that happen, [the dogs are] now making their way to Canada, having a second chance at life."
On his way to play a gig with his band, Modern West, Kevin also brought his son and his own 10-year-old dog, Daisy, for the ride.
"It spoke to my heart," says Kevin of the canine cause. "The last dog that we saved … in two hours was going to be euthanized, and believe it or not, before we made it to Canada, the pilot adopted the dog."


Thousands of homeless dogs are euthanized every year in California, and "Puppy Mills" are breeding more and more dogs at the same time that, given the current economic climate, many people are being forced into situations where they can't keep or afford pets. A lifelong dog lover and frequent traveler with access to a private jet, Jan arranged a deal with Long Beach-based Global Exec Aviation that when they weren't flying celebrities, they could carry the doomed dogs to freedom.
"I think the first trip she took 50-plus dogs, the second trip I think she took 115 dogs all on this plane, so you can imagine this luxury, five-star piece of transportation just filled with animals that are going to get a second chance at life," says Kevin.
The proud dad of new little daughter Grace with wife Christine, Kevin jokes, "Dogs are quieter than newborns," and adds, "I have three little ones, and we'll probably be bringing puppies into their lives so that they can learn those first lessons of responsibility; taking care of a pet, loving it, feeding it."
