In this session I’d like to share some of my thoughts on the upcoming Jolla flagship. Please note, the content is entirely based on speculations (even my drawings). So take it with little grain of salt.
Last year, on 27th of November Jolla launched one of the most highly anticipated smartphone of the year — Jolla. Some weeks before the launch, both Jolla CEO and DNA CEO confirmed the launch date at SLUSH 2013 where former SW development head-honcho, Marc Dillon, gave a remarkable speech on not only the company he founded but also on the enthusiasts build up the community. Coincidentally, SLUSH 2014 is at doors. Jolla and host of other Finnish start ups have highlighted SLUSH on their calendars—with bold font, either.
Previously we reported that Jolla will participate in SLUSH this year. To that end, Chairman Antti Saarnio in a presentation at Innovation Forum stated that we’ll hear more on the success story at SLUSH. Though it behooves Jolla to keep the lid on sales volume and economical situations for “Strong Financial reasons”, but I hope SLUSH can provide Jolla the stage to add another paragraph to their story and to be vocal on their success. Mark November 18th and 19th just for that.
The question is, Will Jolla take the stage and unveil the next flagship?
I doubt.
Traditionally Jolla uncovers their products at MWC. Most prominently, Sailfish OS was demonstrated on Nokia N950 at MWC 2012. And logically, MWC is a great place for companies to unleash their gadgets because of very dense media coverage. Big smartphone hits like Nokia Lumia 520 which embodies the whole WindowsPhone ecosystem, Nokia X, Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2 (and the coming Z4-that’s for MWC’15) and the first true Nokia Touch Screen smartphone, 5800 Xpress Music.
Yet SLUSH is a great place to absorb investors, make deals and simply to have fun. I imagine, some of the executives will stand on stage and render their reign on DNA stores, Three HK, Kazakhstan, Italy and most importantly, India’s SnapDeal. But, no, I wouldn’t tighten my pants for a new phone next month.

What can I expect from Jolla 2
Still, I suspect Jolla to release any information in regard to Jolla 2 – or whatever – but MWC 2015 is the identical place for show off.
Hardware and Design:
Always the exterior design is a legitimate index of what’s been set up beneath. I like the overall design of Jolla since it follows a certain philosophy and definitely does not copy any odds and ends. Almost all the Porsche cars and tanks were rear engine mechanicals. There’s no problem in continuation of an aspirational design. To put it in perspective, when the lead designer of Lumia 930, Jonne Harju, was asked about his favourite design, a decade-long design veteran replied: “From a Nokia point of view, I loved the first N9 device because it changed the company in terms of the way we look at mobile phone design.”
There’s a reference design for a device and over time it matures. Design maturation is miles better than a complete design revamp. First and foremost, keeping the design elements for some generations will authenticate the phone in the end user’s eyes. It’s Jolla. Refraction to design changes will reduce cognitive load for normal users. Notwithstanding the design refractions, the phone exterior must be polished. iPad Air was indeed an iPad Mini but bezels were trimmed down, it was crazily slimmer and mitigation in weight made the Air a true successor to iPad 4. Speaking of dimensions, Jolla smartphone is no less than 9.9mm thick and judged by today’s standards, Jolla is … thick. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not obsessed with thinness mania as I’ll happily trade an ultra-thin phone for an ergonomic one. The thing is, the design should mature and for the most part it’s up to thickness as well as screen real-estate ratio.
Theories aside, still, I expect no seismic shift in aesthetics which is… normal. Most of Jolla’s expenditure is on Software development therefore they have to pinch pennies and control the budget solely floating around HW. Nevertheless, this is downright a good news. The only beneficial of having an ultra-thin, shiny look-at-me phone is to become ostentatious while your friend looking at your phone with amaze. Design maturation should be aligned with practicality. Other than that, appearances are deceptive. As design flaws (while the phone is ultimately thin and fashionable) will become seriously frustrating and your use of that gorgeous phone drops down to Zero. Zilch.
By now you must’ve figured that Sailfish OS isn’t hardware-dependent to run flawlessly. Though, any new iteration of smartphone sports updated internals which is always welcome. Upgraded hardware allows the developers to add and unlock new features. Smooth User Experience is vital yet isn’t enough. WindowsPhone is boastful for fluidity across all the smartphones with various specs. But flagships like Lumia 1520 and Lumia 930 with their top of the line HW began to out-shine their cheaper fellows. Due to powerful SoC –Qualcomm Snapdragon 800- and Denim Firmware, these phones can shoot 4k vidoes as well as always-on Cortana.
When released, Jolla was about two generations behind the competition. Fair enough, Jolla phone was supposedly to be powered by ST-Ericson Thor SoC which then revoked. More to the point Jolla releases a model a year (for now) so Jolla 2 should come with no compromises. Alas, we can’t set up a wish-list and kindly ask Jolla to make one but in order to stay up and running in this fierce competition Jolla needs to pack Jolla 2 with great internals. 2 GBs of RAM, Full-HD 1080p panel along with zipping fast SoC are basic elements for a ~500$ priced smartphone.

Camera
I wasn’t lucky enough to test the camera myself but most of the smartphones snap crisp photos during the day. Even big names like Sony and Samsung fail to undercut PureView reputation with any camera modules they make for phones so far. One must be end-stage fool to expect Jolla 2 to combat Lumia 1020 or even 1520. Make it happen Jolla, please. Nevertheless, to satisfy spec nerds Jolla needs to bump the resolution as well as compelling algorithm refinements.
Software
Major updates for different platforms like Android 5.0, iOS 8.0 and WindowsPhone 8.1came with new devices. Jolla 2 may be preloaded with an overhauled version of Sailfish that could be bigger than lakes and rivers. Oceans, anyone?
Apart from this delayed update (have you tried opt-in method?) theoretically Jolla can address many bugs and hunt them down until MWC 2015 in February. But Sailfish update (2.0?) could possibly bring better UX and above all, heavy polishing. But honestly, stability and consistency are as critical to OS as Oxygen to humans. Operating Systems with great level of consistency induce high amount of impetus to users to use the phone more and more whereas freezes and crashes even in a feature-dense OS walks on your nerves. Thankfully though, as noted before, the coming updates will stress on stability and it’d be the priority in future.
All the blossomed Operating Systems today have come a long way through years of development and updates. On the other side, the toddler Sailfish OS should go up and down, experiences highs and lows to come to fruition and the only way to overcome this process faster than others is to keep monthly update cadence and listening to people over at TJC. Jolla deserves a high-five just for that.
Plus, Artificial Intelligences like Cortana, Siri and Google Now are becoming basic standards. It’s a welcome feature on Sailfish OS even though it’s impractical to a great extent. I’d hardly up vote these ladies (even Elon Musk expressed his concerns) but Sailfish OS is class-leading for being navigated by gestures but there are times you just can’t touch your phone, yeah, and it could be great if your phone could be woke up and commanded with voice.
Senior Designer of Jolla, Jaakko Roppola, during his spare time writes down his thoughts on how a design philosophy would dramatically change the functionality. By reading his posts, I’m pretty confident in Sailfish OS. I recommend you to visit his blog and even comment on his ideas.

The Other Half
Basically TOH is a dazzling idea. While heterogeneous, it keeps the phone skeleton unified. Better, it boosts up functionality though it’s not that vivid for now.
Anyone can design endless styles of TOH but the major obstacle is to mass produce large amount of various TOH models and make them available world-wide. Also, since bigger is better and bigger than bigger is selling in millions, it’s a normal prediction to see a bigger Jolla. As such, bigger form factor requires bigger TOH; consequently, TOHs of different generations won’t work on atypical models.
New TOH along with Jolla 2? Highly likely.
Though if you seek for savage ideas that made their ways into reality you’d better to give 3rd party TOHs a shot. OLED, Keyboard (stars of Kickstarter) and Solar TOHs are made just for discerning JollaUsers like you.
Final Words
It’s time that Jolla needs partners more than ever. A company size of Jolla which has heavily invested in software section can’t pay the bills for top-notch hardware to live up to the competition. Also, OEMs can make categories of phones varied in spec’s but all been powered by Sailfish OS. This and plenty of reasonably priced Sailfish phones will make Jolla crazily visible in emerging markets .Three HK and Snapdeal partnership were fresh blood packages injected to Jolla veins. Now this focus on Sailfish will begin to pay off only if Phone-makers from China and India jump onboard. Remember Zoppo and Oppo?
I assure you that blue-eyed executives over at Helsinki aren’t sitting down drinking coffees; they definitely are in talk with phone manufacturers to adopt Sailfish OS as primary or secondary Operating System for their phones. Perhaps we’ll hear more on this at SLUSH or MWC 2015 which hopefully JU team will cover the event.
And I thought I can design a phone …!
Any ideas on Jolla 2? Please let us know.
