安提加主星行动十天之后，蒙斯克的起义军进攻了塔桑尼斯，联邦的首都。埃德蒙多·杜克将军，前联邦将军，对联邦的布防了如指掌。杜克将军攻击了太空平台，使克哈之子的军队得以在塔桑尼斯着陆。凯瑞根、雷诺与利伯蒂在地面上作战，而蒙斯克也取得了一系列的胜利，但他接下来的决定却让所有人震惊——他命令杜克将军手下的幽灵特工再次使用灵能发射器。在此之前从未有异虫染指的塔桑尼斯淹没在虫海之中，联邦的防线土崩瓦解。
但事情并不完全如蒙斯克的预料。星灵迅速地出现在这个区域，开始投入这场对付异虫的战斗。蒙斯克害怕异虫分兵对付星灵，那么联邦的部队就会伺机逃脱，便命令凯瑞根中尉率领一支小队前去抵抗星灵，为了保护异虫的巢穴不被星灵彻底消灭，抵抗星灵的地面部队。凯瑞根出色地完成了任务，但蒙斯克却无情地抛弃了凯瑞根。他下令全军撤退，无视了凯瑞根的求援。凯瑞根淹没在虫海之中。而雷诺因此与阿克图洛斯·蒙斯克彻底决裂。雷诺、利伯蒂及其追随者决定独自援救凯瑞根，但是他们已经找不到凯瑞根的踪迹。他们救援了一批正在抵抗异虫的绝望的联邦士兵，到这个时候已经没有人顾得上人类之间的战争了。雷诺痛苦地告诉利伯蒂，自己不会抛弃这些人，因为他不是蒙斯克。
营救失败了，凯瑞根被抛弃在了塔桑尼斯。
