Something more of the history of these Sindarin princes of the Silvan Elves is found in my father's latephilological writings. Thus in one essay Thranduil's realm is said to have extended into the woods surrounding the Lonely Mountain and growing along the west shores of theLong Lake, before the coming of the Dwarves exiled from Moria and the invasion of the Dragon. TheElvish folk of this realm had migrated from the south, being the kin and neighbours of the Elves ofLórien; but they had dwelt in Greenwood the Great east of Anduin. In the Second Age their king, Oropher[the father of Thranduil, father of Legolas], had withdraw northward beyond the Gladden Fields. This hedid to be free from the power and encroachments of the Dwarves of Moria, which had grown to be thegreatest of the mansions of the Dwarves recorded in history; and also he resented the intrusions ofCeleborn and Galadriel into Lórien. But as yet there was little to fear between the Greenwood and theMountains and there was constant intercourse between his people and their kin across the river, until theWar of the Last Alliance.

Malgalad of Lórien occurs nowhere else, and is not said here to be the father of Amroth. On the otherhand, Amdír father of Amroth is twice (pp. 252 and 255 above) said to have been slain in the Battle ofDagorlad, and it seems therefore that Malgalad can be simply equated with Amdír. A long peace followed in which the numbers of the Silvan Elves grew again; but they were unquiet andanxious, feeling the change of the world that the Third Age would bring. The Free Men of the North (so called by the Elvesbecause they were not under the rule of Dúnedain, and had not for the most part been subjected by Sauronor his servants) were spreading southwards: mostly east of the Greenwood, though some wereestablishing themselves in the eaves of the forest and the grasslands of the Vales of Anduin. Moreominous were rumours from the further East: the Wild Men were restless. Former servants andworshippers of Sauron, they were released now from his tyranny, but not from the evil and darkness thathe had set in their hearts. Cruel wars raged among them, from which some were withdrawing westward,with minds filled with hatred, regarding all that dwelt in the West as enemies to be slain and plundered.But there was in Thranduil's heart a still deeper shadow. He had seen the horror of Mordor and could not forget it. If ever he looked south its memory dimmed the light of the Sun, and though he knew that it wasnow broken and deserted and under the vigilance of the Kings of Men, fear spoke in his heart that it wasnot conquered for ever: it would arise again.

Nowhere (I believe) is it made clear how the adoption of the Silvan speech by the Sindarin rulers of theSilvan Elves of Mirkwood, as described here, is to be related to the statement cited on p. 270 that by theend of the Third Age Silvan Elvish had ceased to be spoken in Thranduil's realm.

On the march each man carried with him two days' provisions(other than the "need-wallet" mentioned in the text [pp. 288-89]; therest, and other baggage, was carried by small sturdy horses, of a kind, it wassaid, that had first been found, wild and free, in the wide plains south andeast of the Greenwood. They had been tamed; but though they would carry heavy burdens (at walking pace), they would not allow any man to ride them. Of these they had only ten. [Author's note.]

Long before the War of the Alliance, Oropher, King of the Silvan Elves east of Anduin, being disturbed by rumours of the rising power of Sauron, had left their ancient dwellings about Amon Lanc, across the river from their kinin Lórien. Three times he had moved northwards, and at the end of the Second Age he dwelt in the western glens of the Emyn Duir, and his numerous people lived and roamed in the woods and vales westward as far as Anduin, north of the ancient Dwarf-Road (Men-i-Naugrim). He had joined the Alliance, but was slainin the assault upon the Gates of Mordor. Thranduil his son had returned with the remnant of the army of the Silvan Elves in the year before Isildur's march.
The Elvish names of the Mountains of Mirkwood are not found elsewhere. In Appendix F (II) to The Lord of the Rings the Elvish name of Mirkwood is Taur-e-Ndaedelos "forest of the great fear;" the name given here,Taur-nu-Fuin "forest under night," was the later name of Dorthonion,the forested highland on the northern borders of Beleriand in the Elder Days.The application of the same name, Taur-nu-Fuin, to both Mirkwood and Dorthonionis notable, in the light of the close relation of my father's pictures of them:see Pictures by J.R.R.Tolkien, 1979, note to no.37. - After the end of the Warof the Ring Thranduil and Celeborn renamed Mirkwood once more, calling it Eryn Lasgalen, the Wood of Greenleaves(Appendix B to The Lord of the Rings).
19. They had passed the deep depression of the Gladden Fields, beyond which the ground on the east side of Anduin (which flowed in a deep channel)was firmer and drier for the lie of the land changed. But Sauron perceived the depth of Gollum's malice towards those that had "robbed" him, and guessing that he would go in search of them to avenge himself, Sauron hoped that his spies would thus be led to the Ring.

Gollum,however, was before long captured by Aragorn, and taken to Northern Mirkwood;and though he was followed, he could not be rescued before he was in safe keeping. Now Sauron had never paid heed to the "Halflings," even if he had heard of them, and he did not yet know where their land lay. From Gollum, even under pain, he could not get any clear account, both because Gollum indeed had no certain knowledge himself, and because what be knew he falsified. Ultimately indomitable he was, except by death, as Sauron did not fully comprehend, being himself consumed by lust for the ring. Then he became filled with a hatred of Sauron even greater than his terror, seeing in him truly his greatest enemy and rival. Thus it was that he dared to pretend that he believed that the land the Halflings was near to the places where he had once dwelt beside the banks of the Gladden.

Now Sauron learning of the capture of Gollum by the chiefs of his enemies was in great haste and fear. Yet all his ordinary spies and emissaries could bring him no tidings. And this was due largely both to the vigilance of the Dúnedain and to the treachery of Saruman, whose own servants either waylaid or misled the servants of Sauron. Of this Sauron became aware, but his arm was not yet long enough to reach Saruman in Isengard. Therefore he hid his knowledge of Saruman's double-dealing and concealed his wrath, biding his time, and preparing for the great war in which he planned to sweep all his enemies into the western sea. At length he resolved that no others would serve him in this case but his mightiest servants, the Ringwraiths, who had no will but his own,being each utterly subservient to the ring that had enslaved him, which Sauron held.
