Among the many pub discussions prompted by David Bowie's death on Monday (what was his best song? What was his best persona?) one conundrum was being discussed up and down the land: what exactly is the correct pronunciation of his surname?
Does the "ow" in Bowie rhyme with cow, or is it bow like no?
It turns out that even the great man himself was confused. In an interview with Jeremy Paxman in 2000, Bowie was asked to settle the argument over his adopted surname, but admitted he had "lost track" of how it was pronounced.
Asking about the singer's various personas, Paxman (who says ow like cow) says: "Bowie himself is an invention. Do you think of yourself as Bowie or as David Jones (his real name), the boy from South London?"

David Jones began using the stage name David Bowie in 1965, having had a false start with the name Tom Jones.
Eager to avoid confusion with the Monkees singer Davy Jones (who was at that stage an emerging talent on the West End stage), and wanting a more exotic name, he plumped for David Bowie, because it was "the ultimate American knife. It is the medium for a conglomerate of statements and illusions".
