Mark Slaughter, welcome to GlamMetal.com! How the hell are you man?
Hey man thank you. What's shakin' in your world Doobie?
Not much. It's been really cold, and we've gotten a bunch of snow lately...
Snow? Wow! I'm in Tennessee and the weather is like 73 degrees today.
 
Oh, so you're not living in Vegas any longer?
I'm from Vegas originally, that's my hometown. I know it well.
Right on! Ok Mark, There seems to be quite a buzz going around about the Celebrity Rock band you're involved with called Scrap Metal. Mind telling us which artist's are involved with Scrap Metal, and how and when this all came to life?
It started with Gunnar Nelson and I. We were kinda talking about doing a project, and we did a gig for the Nashville Songwriter's Association International last year, (NSAI) and we got a really really good response when we did it. We had Kelly Keagy from Night Ranger and all of these top songwriters a part of it, and we were like, "This is really cool." That was pretty much the beginning of it. We've done a couple of gigs already, one of them was at the Mohegan Sun Casino. It seems like it's just kinda taking on it's own life, and the key point is, it's about the songs. We just wanna go out and have a good time, which is what it's really about. The rock n' roll rat-pack is what I call it.
I'm curious, is the current Scrap Metal line-up final, or will you bring in different artists from time to time?
It is a revolving door. There are the key members which are Gunnar and Matthew Nelson, Kelly Keagy, Eric Martin, and myself. Basically above and beyond that is a bass player and a guitar player. We've been using Dave Marshall who is a great guitar player. We're going to be bringing in frontmen from about every group you can imagine. It's always going to be a huge event, that's for sure. 


Who are some of the other artists that will be performing at the festival this year?
I was just informed that Artimus Pyle, the drummer of Lynyrd Skynyrd is going to be there. Randy Bachman of Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Eric Martin of Mr. Big will be there as well. Just so many people. What does that describe? It's a college fraternity getting buzzed by the kegger! (Laughs) 
I've heard a couple of rumors that Scrap Metal may embark on a national tour in the upcoming months, is there any truth to that Mark?
Well, there's courting going on. Whether or not it's going to come to be, I don't know . I sure would love it if that's the case. If not, we'll be doing pretty much what we've done with Slaughter, which is fly dates, where we fly out and do shows and come back, you know? It's really in the early stages and I don't have any confirmation on a tour. There's conversations that maybe it's gonna happen and maybe not. If I knew it was for sure, I'd definitely let you know right now Doob. 
 
Thanks. Do you guy's plan to write some original Scrap Metal material sometime, or are you just gonna stick to live performances?
Yeah, we've got some new stuff. We're all songwriters here, for instance with Slaughter, Dana Strum and myself wrote and produced all those songs ourselves, and it's the same thing with Scrap Metal. It's really self sufficient, you're dealing with writers and people that actually did all that back in the day.
What else can people expect from Scrap Metal in the future?
Well, we've been courted by some Las Vegas Casino's about booking a few places and having an ongoing show, and bringing in several other artist's that I have spoke of into the mix as well. That's really exciting because I'm from Las Vegas, and the whole idea of bringing in the whole Rock n' roll rat-pack for a show is really what I'd enjoy. 


A couple of my colleagues from GlamMetal.com were covering the Mohegan Sun show last month and said it was amazing, and that you did some stand-up comedy as well. Is that part of the show, or were you just in a particularly funny mood that night?
(Laughs) Oh thanks, I'm glad they had fun. Not that I'm really a stand-up comedian or anything, but I certainly have my humor. I do voice-over work, so that's definitely a side of me that a lot of people don't know, and it's starting to come out more in my old age. (Laughs) It's a lot of fun and there's nothing scripted at a Scrap Metal show, I'll tell ya that. (Laughs)
Ok, time for a couple of Slaughter questions Mark. Here at GlamMetal.com we get emails all the time asking about Slaughter, so hopefully you can answer a couple for us. First, there doesn't seem to be much going on in the Slaughter camp. Is Slaughter still together?
Yes, we're still together. We've actually been doing some fly dates. Dana has been producing Sheryl Crow's sister, and he's also been playing with Vince Neil, and I've been doing this Scrap Metal thing, so we've certainly been busy. But yes, we're still together, and yes it's still happening. I love the band, it's my band, and Dana and I started it all from an idea out of the ashes of the Vinnie Vincent Invasion, and I'm very proud of what we've done.
Please clear up another rumor if you would Mark. Word on the street has been that Slaughter is currently working on a brand new album, is there any truth to that?
We have worked on some stuff. In fact it's a couple of songs that we've actually performed live.


Come on bro, can you give me a little more than that? (Laughs) Can you give us a rough idea of when Slaughter fans can expect a new cd?
(Laughs) Well, a new cd... I think it really boils down to when we can all get together out of our busy schedules. That's really what it is, it's really more about time than anything. Slaughter's "Stick It to Ya" record was written in a total of two and a half weeks, so when do we sit down for two and a half weeks solid and go, ok, we're writing a record. Then again, who are we writing it for, and where's it going to be? Where's it going to live? How are we going to get it out there? Are we going to go through an Indie label, or a major? So you see, there's a lot of things to take into consideration as well.
I understand. There's certainly a lot that goes into writing a record. I'm amazed that you guys wrote "Stick It to Ya" in only two and a half weeks man!
Yeah. The lyrics were written in the studio as we pretty much just tracked it down in the demo process. Again, writing songs has never been an issue for us, it's really just more of having the time, you know? The "Back To Reality" cd when Jeff Blando came into the band was written, demo'd, recorded and mixed in less than two and a half months. So, it was definitely an ass kicking process to get that done.
What's a couple of your all-time favorite Slaughter tunes?
My favorite would probably be "Live Like There's No Tomorrow," which is off our "Fear No Evil" record. I really dug that guitar riff, it was just so much fun when I wrote it, and it had so much energy to it. Obviously "Fly To The Angels" is a classic and right from the heart. It's really hard to pick a favorite, they're all part of me, you know? I think it's more of how I feel that day, or what type of mood I'm in. When you're writing music, it really boils down to the emotions that we all have as humans. You're not just happy all the time, you're not just sad all the time, and I think that our songs really reflect different emotions, you know what I mean?


For Slaughter I think the tour with Kiss was a highlight for us. We really had a good time on that tour, and our record was in it's prime at the time. We were out there setting the groundwork for what we're still doing seventeen years later. That was probably the most fun as well as touring with Ozzy Osbourne. We've been able to play with the legends all the way down the line, so...is there one better than the other? I think it's kinda like having kids, you love them all the same, and it's a part of who you are, and there's some great memories.
Blas Elias has been absent from Slaughter for a while since he joined the Blue Man Group. Is he now back in the band?
No, he's still with the Blue Man Group. He had a child almost a year ago, and he's been focused on that, and he's very happy. The last time I saw him was probably the happiest I've ever seen him. It's all good. I want him to be happy, life is too short, and he's happy doing what he's doing, so I wish him all the best.
What's a couple of your favorite Glam-Metal bands from back in the day?
Obviously the Vinnie Vincent thing that we did was about as glam as it gets. (Laughs) We were over the top man. I still look at some of those old pictures and go, "Man!" (Laughs) But we have great memories from the Vinnie Vincent days, and really enjoyed doing that. As far as glam, you can go all the way down to David Bowie, who was one of the best at it. Poison, who we toured with as well was certainly a Glam-Metal band. I think when you find bands that do that, it's always the epitome of a party waiting to happen, and that's certainly what glam represents.


Aside from touring and playing music, what do you like to do for fun? Any hobbies or anything?
I enjoy being dad. That's what I do first and foremost.
Cool. Looking back on what you've accomplished so far as an artist Mark, what are you the most proud of?
The absolute coolest thing is when people tell you that your songs touched them in a certain way, or really had an impact on their life somehow. That's the biggest compliment of anything, because I'm a music fan as well, and I'm touched by other peoples music the same way, and to know that something that I wrote which is completely out of spontaneity, and became a part of somebody's life, that's really cool. That to me is the biggest accomplishment of anything.
In closing, is there anything you'd like to say to all of the Mark Slaughter and Scrap Metal fans out there?

Thanks. I appreciate you having me. I think that the biggest thing of all this is, is that there's no rules in rock n' roll, and that Scrap Metal is an extension of who I am as a person, and it's no different with Slaughter, because Slaughter is certainly a part of who and where I come from as well. Thanks and take care Doobie.
