Marco Reus: "When you go away to a team in the second, third or fourth tier as a Bundesliga club, it's never easy. Uerdingen did well, they defended very deeply. For us, it was difficult to break them down. It took us a little while, but we did have some good opportunities in the first period. If we'd converted them, that would've settled us down sooner. It's a cup game, anything's possible. For us, it was important that we kept our calm and continued to build the pressure. It was clear that they might not be able to continue making the runs after 60 minutes. We made it 1-0, then 2-0 – and that was game over."

Julian Weigl: "We knew what to expect here: that we'd be up against a team with a lot of former Bundesliga players who would demand everything of us. Anything can always happen in the first round of the cup, even if you're a smaller club. We had to work for it at the start and it took a while before we got the goals. For us, it was important to remain patient. We deserved to win."

Lucien Favre: "We haven't played in the league yet. We're still lacking a bit of tempo. It was difficult all over the pitch. From the bench, you couldn't see whether it was a handball before the opening goal. Paco did very well with the second goal. He practices that regularly. Even after that, the game still wasn't over. You never know how it's going to turn out."
